Christine Heckel

Owner,
Breathe Pilates Place

Christine’s Pilates journey began as a practitioner in 2009 and grew into a career centered on movement education, instructor development, and helping people deepen their understanding of how they move. Today, she serves as Breathe’s Lead Instructor and educator and is a STOTT PILATES® Academy Master Instructor Trainer in STOTT PILATES® Matwork, Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, Barrels, and Injuries & Special Populations, as well as Merrithew Fascial Movement, and ZEN•GA®.

Christine is a Fully Certified STOTT PILATES® Instructor with training across the complete equipment repertoire. Her additional education includes Merrithew Fascial Movement, ZEN•GA®, Total Barre®, EBAS, TRX, and personal training through the American Council on Exercise. This broad movement background informs an approach that looks beyond individual exercises to consider the whole person and the many factors that influence movement.

A significant part of Christine’s work is educating and mentoring other movement professionals. She teaches Pilates instructors and advanced practitioners, helping them expand their knowledge, refine their teaching skills, and explore more complex applications of the Pilates method. At Breathe, she also serves as a resource for the teaching team, consulting with other instructors when clients present with more complex movement needs.

Christine’s work extends beyond the Pilates studio. She is also the Managing Director of Local Motion Project, a nonprofit dance and movement organization in Alexandria, Virginia. Her work there reflects her broader belief in the value of movement as a means of exploration, connection, expression, and lifelong learning.

At Breathe, Christine currently maintains a limited schedule with established private clients and is not accepting new private clients. New private Pilates clients are encouraged to work with Georgi or Natalia, with Christine available to provide mentorship and consultation to the Breathe teaching team when appropriate.

Christine continues to work directly with Pilates instructors, movement professionals, and advanced students, including through her virtual apparatus classes. These sessions provide an opportunity for experienced practitioners to explore the Pilates repertoire with greater depth and benefit from Christine’s perspective as an instructor educator.

For Christine, Pilates is not simply a collection of exercises but an evolving movement practice—one that continues to offer opportunities for curiosity, learning, and greater understanding of the body.
